The North – Live from the Desk in York

Recorded during their recent support slot for Overpass, this live set captures The North delivering eight songs with swagger and urgency—five of them previously unreleased.

They open with Can’t Sleep, a familiar blast of high-octane indie guitar pop: thrashing riffs, frenetic drumming, and frontman Bill Memphis’s laconic, drawled vocals riding coolly over the chaos.

Coming of Age follows, driven by a buoyant melodic bassline, before guitarist Kobi Griggs lets loose with a flash of J Mascis–esque soloing—teasing the song toward a climactic finish of six-string fireworks.

New track Tubes feels like stumbling across a forgotten 12-inch in a dusty 90s indie record shop: emotive vocals and chiming, effects-soaked guitars conjuring the golden age of American alt-college rock. That theme continues on Eyelashes, a short, sweet burst of pop immediacy—like Sonic Youth on one of their rare forays into melody.

She keeps the adrenaline high, all distorted hooks and earnest energy, the band locking into a stride that feels destined to win them a fiercely loyal following.

From there, Blood Orange—title track of their recent EP—slows the pace, brooding and expansive. It builds layer upon layer into a storm of soaring guitars and thunderous drums, recalling the point where shoegaze and grunge once collided into something truly transcendent.

Personal standout Soundtrack Your Soul distills the best of Dinosaur Jr., Ride, and early Stone Roses into one irresistible anthem: a driving bassline, rolling percussion, and a yearning chorus capped with a searing outro solo.

Closing with Sunday, The North underline that they’re not dabbling—they’ve carved out a sound that’s both heartfelt and unmistakably their own. In an era when many thought bands like this had vanished, they prove the indie guitar tradition is not only alive but thriving.
